Morning, Afternoon, or Evening: What's the Best Time to Work Out?

One of the most common questions we hear at Pick It Up Fitness is:

"What's the best time of day to exercise?"

The answer may surprise you.

The truth is, there isn't one perfect time that works for everyone. While research shows there are small advantages to exercising at different times of the day, the best workout is ultimately the one you'll do consistently.

Let's look at the benefits of each option so you can find what works best for your schedule and your goals.

Morning Workouts: Start Your Day Strong

For many people, exercising first thing in the morning helps create a routine that's hard to break.

Benefits of Morning Workouts

Challenges

Your muscles and joints may feel stiffer first thing in the morning, making a proper warm-up especially important. You may also need to wake up earlier, which means prioritizing quality sleep the night before.

Morning workouts are great for people who value routine and want to check fitness off their list before the day gets busy.

Afternoon Workouts: Your Body Is Ready

If your schedule allows, the afternoon can be an excellent time to exercise.

Throughout the day, your body temperature naturally rises, which can improve flexibility, muscle function, and overall performance.

Benefits of Afternoon Workouts

Challenges

Afternoon workouts can sometimes be interrupted by work responsibilities, meetings, or unexpected schedule changes.

If you have the flexibility, however, this can be one of the best times to train.

Evening Workouts: Finish the Day Right

Not everyone is a morning person—and that's perfectly okay.

Many people feel their strongest later in the day after eating regular meals and moving throughout the day.

Benefits of Evening Workouts

Challenges

Late workouts may not be ideal for everyone. Some people find that intense exercise close to bedtime makes it harder to fall asleep, while others have no issues at all.

If evening workouts fit your schedule and don't affect your sleep, they're an excellent option.

What Does the Research Say?

Studies suggest that strength, power, and endurance may be slightly higher in the late afternoon or early evening because of your body's natural daily rhythms.

However, those differences are relatively small compared to the benefits of exercising consistently.

In other words:

A workout you complete at 6:00 a.m. is far better than the "perfect" workout you skip at 5:00 p.m.

So...What's the Best Time?

The best time to work out is the time you can stick with week after week.

Your answers matter far more than what any study says.
